About the Game

A tactical roguelike on a chessboard — where every move is a gamble.

In Zeitnot, you fight on a board you already understand — but every piece has health, attack power, and equipment slots. Build your army in the shop, strap shields and guns onto your pieces, stack gambits to bend the rules, then march into trials to crush the enemy lineup. Win and push deeper; lose and the run is over. There’s no single “correct” build: go all-in on offense, reflect damage with shields, burn the board with turn-start auras, or chase high-risk shop plays.

The roguelike loop

  • Shop: Buy new pieces, arrange your formation, pick up equipment and gambits, and prep for the next fight.

  • Trial: Battle the enemy army in chess-based combat — with damage, captures, and special rules in play.

  • Rewards & progression: Power up after victories and push toward tougher opponents — including bosses.

Every run plays differently. The items you find, the formation you set, and the gambits you choose reshape the game from start to finish.

How combat works

This isn’t just about checkmate. Pieces have HP and attack stats; capture attempts resolve through damage. Failed strikes bounce back, shields reflect hits onto attackers, and guns, projectiles, and auras turn the board into a war zone. Sometimes the right move wins the fight; sometimes it keeps you alive; sometimes it ruins the enemy’s turn.

Build your army

  • Equipment: Shields, weapons, hats, auras — gear up individual pieces.

  • Gambits: Run-long bonuses that trigger on captures, damage, turns, and more.

  • Scrolls: One-shot or special effects during battle.

  • Economy: Balance gold between the shop, wagers, and rewards — play safe or swing big.

What makes it different?

It merges chess intuition with roguelike depth: piece values, equipment synergies, boss mechanics, and a board state that shifts every turn. A move isn’t just changing squares — it’s the payoff (or punishment) for how you built your army.
