About the Game

Wellspring OLC is a systems-heavy multiplayer RPG engine built directly on the bones of classic MUDs and traditional roguelikes. It takes real-time pulse combat, detailed character management, and simulated world mechanics, and wraps them in a presentation you can toggle between classic ASCII and pixel art with a single keypress.

The game splits into two distinct layers: a flexible core engine with free multiplayer access, and a full authoring package containing the game editor, GM live tools, and the official campaign.

Core Engine Systems

Whatever world you play in, the underlying engine drives continuous background simulation and granular tactical depth:

• Real-Time Pulse Combat & Dismemberment: Fights play out in real-time rounds, narrated in a combat log alongside visual spell animations. Anatomy matters: damage targets ten distinct body locations, and head injuries will ruin your aim. Sunder an opponent’s arm, and severed limbs drop onto the ground as lootable items.

• Spells & Environmental Hazards: Line up targeted spells in cones, lines, and bursts to blast enemies backward into hazard terrain like heat vents and sedative spills.

• Densely Layered Character Sheets: Equipping your hero covers 22 body slots, down to the ankles. Skills improve through direct practice up to 100%, while seven core attributes govern your interactions.

• Simulated Economy & Housing: Local shop prices fluctuate based on supply, demand, and your local faction standing. Buy player housing, list gear on global auction houses, forge and dye equipment, or socket runewords into items (though failing volatile runewords will destroy both the runes and the base item).

Friends Join Free

You don't need your entire group to purchase the full game. Anyone can download the base client and join a hosted multiplayer world for free. Free players get unrestricted access to that world's combat, guilds, message boards, arenas, companions, and chat channels.

The client also includes extensive accessibility features out of the box, including screen reader support for Windows and macOS, customisable high-contrast themes, and full Steam Input controller mapping.

The GM Toolset + Campaign

Purchasing the GM Toolset + Campaign package unlocks the official storyline alongside full worldbuilding and hosting toolsets:

• The Gate 8 Campaign: the official campaign showcases the capability of Wellspring OLC at its full power. Play in a massive world featuring an engaging story, 7 distinct peoples and 7 classes, overland wilderness transit, rebirth paths unlocked at maximum level, and more.

• The Creator Toolset: Build your own worlds from scratch. Across 28 no-code editor pages, you can paint maps, design spell particle effects, author branching dialogue trees, give NPCs specialized jobs, or rewrite core mathematical formulas for hit chances and XP curves. You can even open Gate 8 in read-only mode to see how its maps and quests were built, then copy assets straight into your own modules.

• Live GM Tools: Host up to 16 players in your own persistent world or run one-shot tabletop sessions. Drop monsters into rooms, generate treasure on the fly, fire custom world events, and adjust time from day to night in real time as your party plays.
