This story follows a girl named Valerie who was able to attain magical powers, causing her mother to take her to The Unbound Society. Her hope is that with their help, Valerie will make good use of her amazing talents. It plays out from two perspectives: her early childhood and later teenage years, exploring the beginnings and aftermath of this decision.
