Slow Roads
About the Game
Slow Roads is a casual driving game designed for long, cathartic journeys on endless scenic roads. Escape into infinite, procedurally-generated landscapes with configurable locations, road styles, seasons, lighting, and vehicles. Generate a world, set the weather to suit your mood, and just drive.
Endless driving zen

Chase the horizon through endless, ever-unique landscapes. Disconnect from stress while you roll through valleys, fields, forests, and coasts, at whichever speed scratches the itch
Infinitely-generated scenic roads

A novel procedural engine generates the landscapes and roads organically, meaning every road you generate is unique, and no two corners are alike. Choose from paved road options and single-track dirt trails, and from straight lanes to winding corners. World generation is seeded, allowing you to revisit your favourite roads or share them with others.
Configurable locations, seasons, weathers, and lighting

Instantly switch between different locations, seasons, weathers, and time-of-day to suit your mood. Roll through the hills of the Peak District, skim along the California coast, or even head off-world if you really need an escape.
Vehicle customisation and tuning

Choose from a selection of vehicle types and optionally customise their style and tuning, with controls over colours, wheels, plates, engines, handling, and more
Enjoy casual or sim-style driving

"Driving zen" means different things to different people - find your own comforts with controls for steer assist, camera pose, optional traffic, and more. Sim enthusiasts can enjoy a configurable cockpit view and support for controller and wheel input*
*Please note that force feedback is not currently supported but is in development
Just drive...

Free yourself from objectives, challenges, or pressure; simply soak in the views at your own pace. You can even let the car drive for you, with options for automatic steering, automatic speed control, or full autodrive
Steam-exclusive features
The Steam version is a sizeable expansion of the web version, with dozens of exclusive upgrades and features including:
More locations set in other parts of the world
More road style options, including off-road trails
More vehicle options
Vehicle customisation, both for style and physics tuning
Combustion engines and manual transmissions
Configurable traffic modes
A music interface for playing from local files or public radio stations
Improved controller support, including UI navigation
Profiles for saving your progress and settings
Expanded gameplay and graphics settings
Improved scenery details and high-definition assets
Achievements and mementos from your travels
The web version will remain freely available and will continue to receive small updates into the future, but will represent a minimal experience of the game.
Ongoing development

Slow Roads is a living project with new features, locations, and vehicles in continuous development even beyond release. The roadmap is long, and while the following features can't be guaranteed, ideas for future updates include:
Dynamic weather effects and a day/night cycle
New locations, featuring mountains, oceans, tunnels, and more
Enhanced environmental detail
A scene editing tool which helps you to craft your ideal road
These are intended to be free updates to the core game, added after the initial version 1 release. There are currently no plans to gate future features behind DLCs.
Human-made over 5 years

No AI has been used to generate any code or content in or out the game, and never will be. Slow Roads has been a labour of love since the start of the project in 2021, built with a decade of experience in 3D graphics and creative software development. It's a solo-developed project that is deeply personal to me, and I take pride in every detail. Textures are hand-drawn, sounds are recorded locally, and all systems are designed and engineered specifically for the unique context of the game. It's my belief that AI should never replace this kind of creative endeavour.
Please note that procedural generation is not a form of generative AI; the procedures involved are hand-designed mathematical functions used to generate the environments according to specific rules, with directed creative intent.
