Korean Kings
About the Game
Goguryeo was one of the three kingdoms of ancient Korea, alongside Baekje and Silla. It grew across northern Korea and Manchuria, and King Gwanggaeto became one of the most renowned conqueror kings in Korean history by greatly expanding its territory and influence.
In 391, you take the throne of Goguryeo as the young King Gwanggaeto.
Twenty years earlier, the army of King Geunchogo of Baekje attacked Pyongyang Fortress and killed Gwanggaeto’s grandfather, King Gogukwon. This victory established Baekje as the dominant power over Goguryeo, threatening both Goguryeo’s southern frontier and the authority of its royal house.
As the new king, you must reclaim the initiative from Baekje and restore Goguryeo’s strength. Reorganize the royal court, appoint commanders, prepare your armies, and attack Baekje’s northern strongholds to overturn the balance of power that has endured for decades.
But Baekje is not the only power you must consider. Later Yan seeks control of Liaodong in the west, while the Khitan are active along the northern frontier. Silla and Gaya in the south, as well as Wa across the sea, pursue their own interests through war and diplomacy. Decide which powers to confront, which relations to stabilize, and how to respond as conditions change across multiple fronts.
Rule Your Kingdom
Survey neighboring states and developing conflicts from the world map. Reorganize the court, appoint commanders, and prepare your armies. Use politics and diplomacy to maintain stability within Goguryeo while preparing the kingdom for war.
Choose Your Diplomatic Relationships
Baekje, Silla, Later Yan, Gaya, Wa, and the Khitan each pursue their own interests. Negotiate with neighboring powers, form alliances, or declare war when relations collapse. Diplomacy and military strategy must be considered together so that another frontier does not come under threat while your forces are committed elsewhere.
Organize Your Armies and Command Battles Directly
Assign commanders and troops to form armies, then advance into enemy territory. When war begins, command your forces in large-scale real-time field battles and conduct sieges against enemy strongholds. Issue orders according to the terrain, troop deployment, and changing conditions on the battlefield to secure victory.
Manage the Royal House and Succession
Winning wars alone will not preserve your dynasty. Manage the royal family and the line of succession to ensure a stable transfer of power and establish a dynasty capable of continuing through future generations.
Begin in a Goguryeo Under Threat in 391
At the beginning of King Gwanggaeto’s reign, Goguryeo has lost the initiative to Baekje. Later Yan threatens Liaodong from the west, the Khitan are active in the north, and Silla and Gaya in the south—as well as Wa across the sea—are shaping the course of war and diplomacy.
Choose a strategy suited to the situation: reorganize the court and prepare an assault on Baekje’s northern strongholds, or first stabilize relations with other powers. Your goal is to protect Goguryeo’s territory and royal house while expanding the kingdom’s influence.
