Monsterhearts: Welcome to Drowned Lake

About the Game

Monsterhearts: Welcome to Drowned Lake is an indie video game RPG with card mechanics. It’s based on the delightfully moody Monsterhearts tabletop RPG by Avery Alder.Monsterhearts: Welcome to Drowned Lake logo

True to its roots, Monsterhearts: Welcome to Drowned Lake explores the clawing dread of teen angst in a hostile world, the terror and confusion of having a body that's changing without your permission, and the thrill of finding your people after a lifetime of isolation.

  • Welcome to Drowned Lake is a single-player, English-language branching narrative role-playing game and a supernatural teen melodrama.

  • You play a highly-customizable character: a supernatural teenager with a monstrous Skin stuck deep in the interior of late-1990s British Columbia, Canada.

Three NPCs in a school hallway

  • You have four Attributes (Dark, Hot, Cold, and Volatile) and eight Moves (Turn Them On (Hot), Manipulate Them (Hot), Shut Them Down (Cold), Keep Your Cool (Cold), Lash Out Physically (Volatile), Run Away (Volatile), Reveal the Abyss (Dark), and Gaze into the Abyss (Dark).

  • Your PC encounters NPC enemies, lovers, friends, and frenemies, building beautiful and/or dysfunctional relationships using String cards and relationship meters.

An NPC named Summer with dialogue, which Steam won't let me move away to type out, I'm sorry, but she has thinly veiled hunger in her eyes.

  • Your hand of cards determines your Mood, and makes certain Moves easier or harder to succeed at.

    The Story

Welcome to Drowned Lake, a small town in northern B.C. in the 1990s. Once a booming mining town, when the silver ran out, Drowned Lake survived the fate of other ghost towns by welcoming war resisters and other counterculture revolutionaries. Many supernaturals came to stay, and now live shoulder-to-shoulder with Drowned Lake’s unsuspecting human populations.

Your character will discover rival supernatural factions, befriend fellow monsters, and clash with unsuspecting humans while struggling to hand in your math homework on time. Clever timeloop mechanics let you play the game more than once, discovering new secrets with every play.

Welcome to Drowned Lake takes what’s great about the original Monsterhearts and brings it to your computer.
