Locomotive Works
About the Game
Build steam locomotives. Haul freight. Prove your engine.
Locomotive Works is a train-building and freight simulator set in the early twentieth century golden age of steam. Design steam locomotives and use them to deliver freight across a working railway network. Find out whether your engineering choices can handle real jobs.
Choose the parts that make up your locomotive, then use it to haul freight, earn money, climb grades and complete delivery contracts. A good-looking engine is not enough: weight, cost, pulling power, speed, range and running performance all matter.
Build locomotives that do real work
Design steam locomotives from practical components such as chassis, boilers, cabs, tenders, chimneys, domes and fittings. Choose paint colours and add wear and grime to give each locomotive its own working character. Your choices affect how the engine performs, what it costs to build, how much it can haul, and which jobs it is suited for.
A small engine may be cheap and efficient, but can struggle with heavy loads. A larger freight locomotive may have the power for steep grades, but it costs more to build and run. The aim is not just to make a locomotive that looks right — it must be able to do the work.
Run freight across a working railway
Take freight jobs, move wagons between industries, and choose the right locomotive for the route. Loads, distance, gradients and running costs all affect whether a job is a good match for your current engine.
Earn money from successful work, invest in new builds, and improve your locomotive designs as the jobs become more demanding.
Prove your design
Once your locomotive leaves the depot, the railway becomes the test. Heavy trains, steep climbs, braking distances, fuel, water, and boiler pressure all matter when you are trying to make your deliveries.
Drive the engine yourself and see how your build performs in practical conditions. A locomotive that looks powerful in the workshop still has to prove itself on the grade.
Design for real railway challenges
Trains feel heavy, momentum matters, and poor design choices have consequences. Clear controls and readable feedback help newcomers get started, while heavier loads, steeper grades and more demanding jobs give experienced players a real challenge.
Drive through mountains, forests, and open countryside across a varied freight railway. Design the locomotives you need, meet the challenges of the routes, and make the deliveries your customers depend on.
