Land Of Opportunities

Land Of Opportunities

About the Game

Start from zero: no money, no shelter, no ID. Struggle to survive by taking on odd jobs in the subway and at the market until you can scrape together enough to buy a diploma and get to work. Upgrade your IQ by building a computer. And here's a twist: COMPUTER GAMES also boost your IQ in this game!

The game is set in 2000, and its atmosphere reflects that period.

LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

I made this game in 2014 for a competition with the theme "step beyond the edge." The game combines elements of then-modern "incremental game" mechanics with older, late 90s games like "Computer Tycoon."

Unlike the aforementioned Computer Tycoon, where the player started as a janitor and climbed the career ladder to become the CEO of a tech giant, in the Land of Opportunities, the player doesn't have a job at the very beginning. And to even become a janitor, you have to work hard. But naturally, the game doesn't end with becoming a CEO either -- after all, it's about stepping beyond the edge...

An adapted (and improved) version of the game has been prepared for Steam.

The competition entry included the following artistic description:

When I first arrived in N, I couldn't have imagined that I would make a game about these events. Back then, I didn't even know what computer games were. All the names have been changed. I intentionally simplified some things: for example, I didn't always rent a room in the barracks. Otherwise, I tried to describe the events in as much detail as possible through the language of game.

GAME FEATURES:

  • You can beg for tokens in the subway.

  • You can unload sacks at the market, and later open up trading stalls there.

  • You can take on various jobs (starting as a janitor and moving up, for example, to the head of the technical laboratory department). Each job has a certain requirement that needs to be met in order to get it.

  • You can buy a belyash, you can buy shawarma in pita bread, you can buy double shawarma, you can buy shawarma wrap.

  • You can assemble your own PC, buying a processor, memory (640K is enough for everyone), a video card, and so on.

  • You can go on the INTERNET and download various programs and games.

  • You can take over the world.
