Synopsis:

Young alchemist Jacob lived a quiet, peaceful life, preparing to take the reins of his family's trade. Yet everything was turned upside down when his shadow was stolen by the Mistress, a sorceress dwelling in the heart of the Twisted Forest. To survive, the youth had no choice but to follow in its wake.

Yet here, upon the far side of the river, peculiar laws hold sway. Dried beetles may prove far more precious than gold, gifts worse than a curse, and butterflies more perilous than spiders. Jacob must choose what to rely upon as he cleaves his path—his familiar alchemy or a fickle gift for music—and whom to share the road with. He must also answer the most crucial question of all: does light ever bring salvation, and darkness certain doom?
