Diorama Break

About the Game

Welcome to DIORAMA BREAK! In this special tactics JRPG, you must directly guide the hero on a journey to change the world (whether he wants it or not). Marshal your wits and fight your way through turn-based battles and awkward conversations alike. Choose your words and actions with care. Or don't. See what happens...

Gameplay Features

  • Move between exploration, conversations, and turn-based combat.

  • Branching conversations. Speak directly to the hero, they will respond in kind:

    • The advice and treatment you grant will affect events and outcomes.

    • The right choice is not always obvious.

    • Opportunities to actively interject during dialogue to make your opinion known.

  • An unorthodox tactical battle system:

    • Turns are split into 6 substeps, actions have varying substep durations and areas of effect. Slower actions might hit harder, while faster actions can be easier to land.

    • Both Player and Enemy units queue multiple actions ahead of time then execute them concurrently.

    • Time your actions and movements carefully to hit your opponents before they hit you.

    • Inspired by fighting game concepts such as footsies, frame data, and attack interruption.

  • Intuitive yet deep character builds for combat:

    • Equipping different weapons and clothing affects what actions you'll have available in combat; equipment can be combined to create synergies.

    • Level up through combat, exploration, and conversation. Reaching new levels lets you choose between unique passive bonuses.

Also featuring...

  • Music and sound design from composer dante gofar:

    • Myriad genre inspirations including jazz fusion, electronic, and folk music.

    • Reacts dynamically to gameplay.

  • A narrative with layers.

  • Accessible controls and gameplay. Can be played with only a mouse, no action-based challenges.

  • A modern pixel aesthetic strictly stylized, yet unbeholden to the ways of old.

  • Built on top of a custom 2D game engine.
