Desktop Pet Engine

Desktop Pet Engine

About the Game

This is a desktop pet creation game. You can create characters you like or download characters shared by others from the Steam Workshop, then bring them onto your desktop to keep you company! Character behavior is controlled entirely through the behavior tree system. You can freely edit each character’s behavior tree to design how it behaves.

A behavior tree is a tree-shaped structure made up of nodes and connections. By combining different nodes, you can design how a character behaves.

The game divides nodes into the following categories:

1. Root nodes: The entry point of a behavior tree

2. Composite nodes: Arrange how multiple child nodes execute

3. Decorator nodes: Add execution rules to a single child node

4. Condition nodes: Check whether a condition is met

5. Action nodes: Perform specific behaviors

6. Subtrees: Another behavior tree.

A behavior tree starts at the root node and runs according to each node’s rules. Nodes return one of three states: Success, Failure, or Running. These states determine which behaviors execute next.

For example, connect “Play Animation” and “Drag follow” under a “Sequence” node to create an animated character you can freely drag around your desktop.

By combining different nodes, you can start with simple actions and gradually design more varied behaviors.

For example, create a character that responds to keyboard input:

Create a character that walks, sleeps, and idles:

Create a character that responds to interaction with animation and sound:

Create a character that grows from an egg into a chicken:

Put multiple characters in the same project:

You can add multiple characters to a desktop pet project, arrange their positions, and summon them onto your desktop together
