About the Game
DARK HORIZON IS A SINGLE-PLAYER SURVIVAL SHOOTER GAME:
You are trapped in a Russian city bordering Finland, after the Russian government has completely locked down the city and bombed the main bridge leading to the residential sector due to a large-scale conflict. Your squad has been killed, leaving you seriously wounded and completely alone right in the middle of this conflict. In an attempt to control the situation, the Russian authorities have created a special military group: the DWCU (Domestic Warfare Containment Unit). This unit has strict control over the borders of the city with support from the RUAF, killing any escapees on sight to keep information away from the public eye. Despite this, multiple groups of mercenaries, scavengers, and other military groups have been breaking into the city for their own personal goals, causing the environment to become extremely hostile. To make matters worse, a corporation named "Biostratum", which seemingly has ties with the Russian government, has deployed controlled radiation and experimental biohazard zones to secure its facility located in the center of the city. The government has made no effort to rescue any survivors of the conflict and is leaving everybody inside to die. It's very clear that this conflict is just a test for something greater, and you are one of the subjects.
FEATURES:
Aggressive AI that dynamically changes goals during combat
A dark, gloomy atmosphere with heavy ambience
Realistic player and NPC health simulation, with individual categories of status effects for whole-body functions and limbs
Accurate depictions of firearms from different time periods and locations
Tasks, quests, trading, and general bartering with goods and money
Social NPCs that will converse and interact with each other and the player outside of combat
GAMEPLAY:
Dark Horizon draws much of its inspiration from other similar survival games. Base mechanics, such as medical treatment and firearms handling, have been tuned for realism without being needlessly punishing. If you screw up, however, you will face the consequences. For example, severe infection will lead to forced amputation, starvation will lead to extreme weakness and exhaustion, and taking experimental medicine can cause slow organ failure. Your character is far from invincible, but still has the knowledge and willpower to survive.
You progress through the game by accessing specific transition points in the game. These transition points lead you into new areas of the city, with routes that take you to your own bunker. Some routes may also lead to temporary hideouts that have their own individual stashes. Over time, you can upgrade these shelters to better support your needs in the city.
Your life depends on your connections, with greedy traders just barely helping you at the start of your abandonment. But, do some dirty work for them, and you'll start to unlock more of their store and meet new connections of theirs. Do enough work and meet enough people, and you may be able to make it back home... If you're lucky.
This game has elements of an extraction shooter, but does not have a "true" extraction system as seen in more popular games. It is more of a mixing pot of multiple different survival genres, making something unique.
