Burr Puzzle
About the Game
The Luban Lock (English: Burr Puzzle), also known as Kongming Lock in Chinese folklore, originates from the mortise-and-tenon joint structure first created in ancient Chinese architecture. It is a traditional Chinese intellectual toy, traditionally believed to have been invented by the carpenter Luban during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, hence its name. The shapes and internal structures vary, but they are generally easy to dismantle and difficult to assemble. Luban is regarded as the ancestor of carpenters in China and the founder of fine woodworking techniques. Kongming was a renowned military strategist during the Three Kingdoms period, serving as the Prime Minister of Shu Han.
The sticks of the Luban Lock interlock with each other to form a stable structure that does not come apart. Some of the sticks have hollow spaces, so when they interlock, the center of the entire structure is solid. Typically, one complete stick is inserted last to stabilize the structure, thus "locking" it in place; this stick is also referred to as the "locking stick." Opening a Luban Lock is relatively easy, but putting them together requires a certain level of spatial thinking ability and enough patience.
