Als Gott schlief

About the Game

“When the train doors opened and I saw the gates of Auschwitz for the first time, I knew God was asleep.”

Mosche Zavadsky
Holocaust Survivor

Als Gott schlief” (When God Fell Asleep) takes players into the deeply emotional and dramatic stories of three people caught in the midst of the Holocaust in Poland — individuals whose backgrounds and perspectives on this atrocity could not be more different.

Two of them are young Jewish siblings, Regina and Roman, who, after being torn from their home, find themselves in a desperate and dangerous struggle for survival as they try to escape the grasp of the Gestapo.

The third is a German father, who, together with his wife and child, moves to occupied Poland to advance his career and rise through the ranks of the Nazi regime — gaining wealth and prestige, but becoming a conscious perpetrator of its crimes.

Across multiple chapters, the player takes on the roles of both victims and perpetrator, experiencing one of humanity’s darkest chapters from their unique points of view.

Throughout this narrative journey, players make consequential decisions across four two-hour chapters for each perspective, explore a historically authentic world, solve tasks and environmental puzzles, and meet people whose stories are inspired by true events and eyewitness accounts.

Als Gott schlief invites players to reflect. Not to win and to witness how choices, both large and small, echo through one of history’s darkest times. It explores what dehumanization did to its victims, and how ordinary people became capable of committing — or ignoring — such horrors.
